STAIRS, RAMPS AND GLAZING (BY CORRESPONDENCE PRESENTER : Joost Hogewoning
Aim of CPD:
It is a basic overview with supplementary information and explanations of SANS 10400 parts M and N + SANS 10137 (with references to Parts S and T) This CPD will help the professional to understand, improve and give new insight into the design of stairways and give a better understanding of glazing. It will improve instructions/specifications for these disciplines. It addresses the very basic concepts and regulations and does not address complex buildings and detailed complex calculations. It is aimed at the average designer and will touch on the most important and relevant highlights from the different SANS documents.
Copies of Parts M and N are supplied. The CPD is presented in the following 2 parts:
- STAIRS AND RAMPS: dimensional requirements / types of stairs and design / types of landings / flight restrictions / stairs in escape routes / balustrades and handrails. Ramp types and requirements, specifications, and gradients of all types of ramps (including vehicle ramps).
- GLAZING: some historical snippets / different types of glass and their properties / plastic glazing (all 4 types) and specifications / safety glazing / environmental glass / special glazing / acoustic properties / glass in fire protection.
FORMAT: this CPD is presented in a correspondence format. The participant will receive the presentation and accompanying notes in a PDF format by e-mail on the starting date. The course must be completed within 14 days. This will enable the participants to work at their own pace, and to move between slides and notes to and for better understanding. No need to be at a computer at any specific time, or be affected by load shedding, and will use less than 40Mb data. Questions may be submitted by e-mail. A short questionnaire has to be completed at the end to ascertain that the participant has worked through the material and has understood it. When studied properly, this CPD is the equivalent of a half-day event.
