We have formed the Voluntary AssociationCollaboration (VA Collab) to specifically address the challenges being faced by the profession and our members. The type of issues being faced with regard to municipal challenges is being experienced by all VA’s and across all categories of registration.

Some of the work already undertaken include :

1. Formal Meetings with the Municipality

2. Correspondences with the Municipality

3. Formally written to the Municipality

4. Engagement with SACAP

5. Formally written to SACAP requesting their assistance and advice

6. Engaged with the Municipality ombudsman

7. Formally written to the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal

We are looking to host an online discussion (TBC) where the role-players and stakeholders can discuss

The correspondence to the premier was issued last week, and we a wait a response.

We welcome any constructive suggestions as to how we collectively address this issue.

12.2 Voluntary Associations are hereby approved for the purposes of validating and monitoring Category 1 CPD activities offered by providers who have not been approved in terms of these conditions and may allocate appropriate credits to such activities.

12.3 Voluntary Associations may charge an appropriate fee for the purposes of recovering costs reasonably incurred for validating such activity

In terms of SACAP publication “CONDITIONS RELATING TO CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND RENEWAL OF REGISTRATION”

13.1  Subject to the definition of CPD as set out in this document, a voluntary association should, in approving a Category 1 CPD activity, take into consideration the following :

a)The activity should serve to maintain or enhance the knowledge, skills and competence of all those who participate in it;

b)The activity should meet an educational and developmental need and provide an effective learning experience for the participants;

c)The depth and breadth of the subject matter covered must be appropriate;

d)The subject covered should provide a balanced view and should not be unduly promotional;

e)Courses may be assessed by obtaining feedback from participants

13.2  Any provider who desires validation of a Category 1 CPD activity must apply to a voluntary association for approval of such activity.

13.3 Any registered person who intends to undertake a CPD activity offered by a provider other than a voluntary association or accredited educational institution should ascertain whether such activity is approved in terms of clause 13.2

13.4  An approved CPD activity is valid for such period as specified by the Council from time to time.

  1. Any registered person or a non-approved provider may make representations to the Council should they feel aggrieved by an assessment by a voluntary association of a CPD activity, either in terms of content or credit allocated, and such representation must be made no later than 30 days after an assessment has been made by such voluntary association.

SAIBD (including other VA’s) is authorised to validate Continuing Professional Development Courses and has accredited and successfully hosted a variety of High Quality courses for the Continuing Education of the Architectural Professionals.

SAIBD has and continues to challenge unfair legislation since 1973.

1. Challenge & assist the Municipalities on interpretation of legislation.

2. Task Team Representation to rewrite the National Building Regulations & Standards Act 103 of 1977.

3. Actively involved in helping implement the Spatial Land Use Management Act & associated Schemes & drive amendments.

4. Actively involved with SACAP, helping fulfil their mandate while ensuring the rights of the Professionals.

5. SABS Technical Committee Representation for the SANS 10400 suite of Standards.

6. Actively involved in commenting & challenging or promoting Legislation, Standards & By-Laws for the Built Environment.

& the Profession

The Government has eased their way out of lockdown, but the challenges are no means over.

Many practices or individuals may never recover to full activities or be able to sustain their staff complement in the built environment.

On the other hand, just as the professionals and staff were discovering the comfort and advantages of working from home, the time to return to a place arrived and brought with it challenges in flipping their traditional or conventional traits and adhere to compliance with the new Covid regulations, from virtual meetings to physical interactions with various individuals in the built environment.

As we move into the transitional phase of rebuilding society, more so the Architectural Profession, SAIBD will be standing firmly in assisting their membership in providing Affordable CPD events and engaging with various role players for the betterment of the industry.

In view of the unchartered and difficult territory we now find ourselves in, SAIBD has done its best to assist its members during these uncertain times, below are just a few mechanisms that SAIBD has implemented for the benefit of its membership:

 SAIBD lowered their annual registration fees by more than 30% and has a structured payment plan for those members experiencing financial challenges. Members can contact the office to arrange payment relief. Provided members have adhered to the arrangements, members will still be privileged to benefits on offer.

The CPD and Education committees have excelled themselves by providing affordable online events while maintaining our philosophy of providing beneficial and educational workshops. We ensure that the profession receives value for the monies outlaid. We are aligning our course content to the RPL, Special Consent and Limited Dispensation.

SAIBD hosted SACAP at the Construction Expo Webinar. On both days of the expo, free CPD points were on offer, provided the professional had registered for the event.

SAIBD has been in engagement with SACAP and other VA’s regarding the IDOW and Code of Conduct. With the IDOW, SAIBD has identified flaws that affect the lower categories of registration and the Missing Middle. SAIBD has made recommendations to SACAP so that these processes do not have direct impact on your livelihood. SACAP intends to gazette this soon. We reassure our members that we will challenge SACAP via collaboration to ensure that the IDOW is not disadvantageous.

SAIBD has commented on the Code of Conduct. We have Identified and provided adjustments that need to be addressed.

We will continue to monitor, comment and make recommendations when required for the benefit of the profession and our membership.

FORMAT: this CPD is presented in a correspondence format. The participant will receive the presentation and accompanying notes in a PDF format by email on the starting date.

The course must be completed within 14 days. 

This will enable the participants to work at their own pace, and to move between slides and notes to and fro for better understanding. No need to be at a computer at any specific time, and will use less than 50Mb data. Questions may be submitted by e-mail. A short questionnaire has to be completed at the end to ascertain that the participant has worked through the material and has understood it.

The South African Institute of Building Designers is a well experienced Institute and a fully recognized voluntary organization, into which any architectural practitioner is welcome and should be a member.

In today’s world we are concerned with our membership’s involvement in attaining CPD points and climbing the architectural ladder of achievement.

As well as being an ever present body of knowledge, to assist our membership in advice and problem solving.

Our members can claim category 3 CPD credits with SACAP for being a member as well as maintain their CPD credits by attending our CPD workshops held throughout the year.
