Course Information (Content/Overview)

This CPD is presented in a correspondence format. The participant will receive the presentation and accompanying notes in a PDF format by e-mail on the starting date. The course must be completed within 14 days. This will enable the participants to work at their own pace, and to move between slides and notes to and fro for better understanding. No need to be at a computer at any specific time, and will use less than 40Mb data. Questions may be submitted by e-mail. A short questionnaire has to be completed at the end to ascertain that the participant has worked through the material and has understood it. When studied properly, this CPD is the equivalent of a one-day event.

Objective

This CPD should help the professional to understand and improve the design of water supply and drainage, improve instructions/specifications, and to check the plumbing works on site in an informed way. It addresses the very basic concepts and regulations, and does not address complex buildings and detailed complex calculations. It is aimed at the average designer and will touch on the most important and relevant highlights from the different SANS documents.
The CPD is presented in the following 4 parts:

1. Water supply: Design considerations, water efficiency regulations, understanding water pressure, pipes and pipe fittings, water storage, hot water supply, laying and installation of pipes, ring feeds, reticulation diagrams and fire installations.
2. Rain water harvesting: gutters and downpipes, rainwater harvesting and systems, grey water and its reticulation, storm water disposal.
3. Drainage: underground drainage, manholes and fittings, designing and planning sewer lines, drawing of sewer sections, septic tanks and French drains, drainage above ground, fittings and infrastructure in buildings.
4. History: some historical snippets of interest about water supply and sewerage.
