GOING GREEN: An overview of principles and practices of SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE- BY CORRESPONDENCE Presenter: Mr Joost Hogewoning

This CPD is presented in a correspondence format. The participant will receive the presentation and accompanying notes in a PDF format by e-mail on the starting date. The course must be completed within 14 days. This will enable the participants to work at their own pace, and to move between slides and notes to and fro for better understanding. No need to be at a computer at any specific time, and will use less than 40Mb data. Questions may be submitted by e-mail. A short questionnaire has to be completed at the end to ascertain that the participant has worked through the material and has understood it. When studied properly, this CPD is the equivalent of a one day event.

- Social sustainability: town planning, mass housing, biophilic design, social impact.
- Economic goals: cost effectiveness, recycling of buildings, restoration works.
- Green building: life cycle assessment, siting of buildings, energy efficiency, water efficiency, green roofs, materials from renewable resources, eco-friendly materials, alternative building methods, construction efficiency, indoor environment quality, environmental planning, eco flooring, ergonomics and retro fitting.
- A few examples of sustainable green buildings.

Objectives
This CPD will give the professional a basic overview and understanding of the principles, materials and methods to employ for sustainable architecture and green building practices. It is aimed at the average designer with little experience or limited understanding of green design, and will touch on the most important and relevant elements of this philosophy. It will enable the designer to further develop skills through self-study along these guidelines.
