AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT

SUMMARY
When it comes to provision of affordable housing, we all have a role to play. Government can and should create an environment that enables professionals, businesses and other stakeholders to contribute to the provision of affordable housing through legislation, law enforcement, knowledge sharing and effective governance. However, the burden to establish and promote liveable neighbourhoods’ rests with each and every one of us especially within the built environment. It is therefore important that we all seek the role we can play in achieving affordable housing and collaborate. Municipal and government officials need to be motivated and empowered to improve service delivery in as far as approval of urban development applications are concerned. It has been argued that South Africa does not have a legislation problem, it has an implementation problem. I believe we have an implementation problem because we have a mindset problem. There is a shared sense of helplessness and complacency that hinders creativity and implementation.
