(including other VA’s) is authorised to validate Continuing Professional Development Courses and has accredited and successfully hosted a variety of High Quality courses for the Continuing Education of the Architectural Professionals.

SAIBD has and continues to challenge unfair legislation since 1973.

1.Challenge & assist the Municipalities on interpretation of legislation.

2.Task Team Representation to rewrite the National Building Regulations & Standards Act 103 of 1977.

3.Actively involved in helping implement the Spatial Land Use Management Act & associated Schemes & drive amendments.

4.Actively involved with SACAP, helping fulfil their mandate while ensuring the rights of the Professionals.

5.SABS Technical Committee Representation for the SANS 10400 suite of Standards.

6.Actively involved in commenting & challenging or promoting Legislation, Standards & By-Laws for the Built Environment.

1. What is CPD?

CPD is a term used to describe learning activities that professionals take part in to develop and enhance their skills This could include courses, workshops, informal learning opportunities, or vocational education that helps to expand knowledge or add new skills related to a chosen career. In terms of Architecture & SACAP, there are three types of CPD.

2. Why is CPD important / What are the benefits of CPD?

It has been widely recognised that qualifications need to be supported by ongoing skills-based or practical learning.

Engaging in CPD ensures that your qualifications never become outdated. You can continually upskill yourself and update your existing skills, no matter your age, occupation, or educational level.

CPD LETS YOU TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR OWN DEVELOPMENT

CPD is a process normally driven by you – not your employer or anyone else. Unlike traditional learning, it requires a conscious, proactive approach. Through CPD, you’re able to see how far you’ve come, reflect on what you’ve learned and plug up any gaps in your knowledge or experience. You’ll also be building a portfolio of skills that you can show to employers or clients.

CPD ALLOWS YOU TO ADAPT TO THE EVOLVING WORKPLACE

The industries of today never stand still: change is occurring faster than ever. Employees have to keep up with the rapid pace of change brought about by advances in technology; they have to adapt quickly to their new circumstances. While qualifications alone used to be the main factor when hiring someone, strong CPD credentials attract equal attention today.

3. Who or what are approved CPD providers?

In terms of SACAP publication “CONDITIONS RELATING TO CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND RENEWAL OF REGISTRATION”

12.1 Voluntary associations and accredited educational institutions are hereby approved for purposes of offering Category 1 CPD activities, unless otherwise specified by the Council.

4. Who or what can validated Category 1 CPD?

In terms of SACAP publication “CONDITIONS RELATING TO CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND RENEWAL OF REGISTRATION”

12.2 Voluntary Associations are hereby approved for the purposes of validating and monitoring Category 1 CPD activities offered by providers who have not been approved in terms of these conditions and may allocate appropriate credits to such activities.

12.3 Voluntary Associations may charge an appropriate fee for the purposes of recovering costs reasonably incurred for validating such activity

5. What are the conditions regarding the validation of CPD?

In terms of SACAP publication “CONDITIONS RELATING TO CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND RENEWAL OF REGISTRATION”

13.1 Subject to the definition of CPD as set out in this document, a voluntary association should, in approving a Category 1 CPD activity, take into consideration the following :

a)The activity should serve to maintain or enhance the knowledge, skills and competence of all those who participate in it;

b)The activity should meet an educational and developmental need and provide an effective learning experience for the participants;

c)The depth and breadth of the subject matter covered must be appropriate;

d)The subject covered should provide a balanced view and should not be unduly promotional;

e)Courses may be assessed by obtaining feedback from participants

13.2 Any provider who desires validation of a Category 1 CPD activity must apply to a voluntary association for approval of such activity.

13.3 Any registered person who intends to undertake a CPD activity offered by a provider other than a voluntary association or accredited educational institution should ascertain whether such activity is approved in terms of clause 13.2

13.4 An approved CPD activity is valid for such period as specified by the Council from time to time.

Any registered person or a non-approved provider may make representations to the Council should they feel aggrieved by an assessment by a voluntary association of a CPD activity, either in terms of content or credit allocated, and such representation must be made no later than 30 days after an assessment has been made by such voluntary association.
