Has ChatGPT, Midjourney and DALL-E got you wondering what the role of the future architectural designer could be? And are you looking for a way to start your journey toward the future of the field? Then why not consider learning programming?

Programming can be seen as another language – the language of machines. If one can speak to a machine, one can command it. And if one can command it, one can actually make the computer do the work we don’t really want to do. Or work we wish to do faster.

From creating SANS XA to professional fee calculators. to customizing your Revit templates and automatically producing window schedules, programming has many applications in the field of architecture…

So what if you knew the fundamentals of how to code so when you actually encounter any type of programming – actual writing of algorithms (or steps for a machine to follow) you had the confidence to do it?

At An Architect, we can help you get there. And we’re teaming up with SAIBD to make this possible.

Our Introduction to Programming for Architectural Designers is the first of a series of courses which will get students, candidates and professionals introduced to programming to prepare for the next wave of architectural innovation: artificial intelligence for architects.

The course is aimed at de-mystifying coding, opening one’s mind to the potential of what can be achieved in the world of design by programming and setting one on a track to learn one of the most popular programming languages leading to computational design.

Summary of key points:

SACAP Competencies:

  1. Architectural history & theory
  2. Architectural design
  3. Computer applications

After this Module, delegates will be able to:

  1. Speculate through an informed perspective on emerging technologies and trends which will impact the field of architecture
  2. Understand the core theories related to the application of computational design within a broader context
  3. Craft a career path toward one of the emerging fields in architectural design, i.e. computational design
  4. Programme elementary scripts in Python
  5. Model a low complexity structure using Revit
  6. Programme in Dynamo to recreate a parametric object

Handouts/Contents provided:

  • PDF e-book with all content – pre-recordings, presentations and academic papers.
  • Access to the Future of Architecture Facebook Group

Upcoming Modules will include:

  • Theoretical frameworks of computational design
  • Career guidance toward becoming a computational designer
  • Programming basics in Python using an IDE of choice
  • Modelling basics in Revit using either a local or updated version of Revit (Preferrably Revit 2023)
  • Visual Programming basics in Dynamo using the Dynamo Language Primer, pdf and online version
